Understanding the A2
What is the CAA A2 C of C Certification?
The A2 C of C (A2 Certificate of Competency) was introduced on the 31st of December 2020 to allow you to fly small drones 'close to people' and under the new regulations, you can operate a drone commercially for the first time without needing to spend ££££'s on training and CAA Authorisation!
The new A2 subcategory will allow you to ‘fly closer to people’ if you hold an A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC) and are flying drones less than 2Kg (and over 250g!); so it's the perfect qualification if you're flying drones like those in the DJI Mavic series (Original, Mavic 2 and Mavic 3) and the Parrot Anafi.
You'll need to do an A2 C of C Training Course and Theory Examination with a CAA Approved Drone Training school like UAVHub to be able to get your A2 Certificate and take advantage of the amazing opportunities this new system offers for Drone Pilots who fly small drones!

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions about the A2 C of C Course...
- Once I sign up, how long do I have, to complete the training?
You have 12 months from the date you purchase the course, to having to pass the Theory Examination however, many people complete everything (including their Examination) in 24-48 hours!
- How many Mock Examinations are available?
When you join our course, you'll have access to an unlimited amount of Mock Examinations! Our Mock Examination System uses an ever-growing bank of questions and 'creates' a random Mock Examination for you each time you start a new Mock Exam. We've found that people taking the Mock Exam a number of times do VERY well in the Final Examination as they are fully prepared!
- Are there any resit fees if I fail the Theory Examination?
No... We don't charge for resits (although it's VERY unlikely you won't pass with flying colours on the first attempt... We have a 99.8% first-time pass rate!)
- How many questions are there in the Theory Examination?
There are a total of 30, multiple-choice questions in the A2 C of C Theory Examination and you have 75 minutes to complete the examination.
- What is the Pass-Mark for the Theory Examination?
The pass mark is 80% - the highest in the industry... We pride ourselves on this and the fact that UAVHub students are known for their 'better than average' understanding and knowledge. Don't worry about this though; our teaching means that you'll be easily able to achieve this, just like the thousands of other successful candidates who have gone before you!
- How long do I get for the Theory Examination?
You have a total time of 75 minutes available for the A2 C of C Theory Examination. This time is set by the CAA (and not by UAVHub). We find that the average time it takes people to complete the Exam is generally 10-15 minutes though, thanks to the way we teach and then allow you to practice, using our Mock Exam System! :)
I've completed the 'on-demand video learning', how does the Online Examination work?
When you have completed your 'on-demand video learning', you will be able to book in for your online A2 Theory Examination 24/7 at a time to suit you.
When it comes to taking your examination, you will be required to show your examiner around your workspace using your webcam so they can ensure that you have no reading materials and notes to hand.
The Examination is multiple-choice and it will be invigilated by our AI system throughout.
Please note; that a Desktop or Laptop computer with a Chrome Browser will be required to take the examination! You will not be able to take the examination using a tablet device such as an iPad. You will need to be able to move the camera 360 around your environment so that the invigilation system can see your entire room.
Essential Equipment Required for Examination
- Desktop or Laptop
- Chrome Browser
- Webcam
- Microphone
- Internet Connection with a minimum of 2Mbs speed
- Photographic ID (If you don't have a photo ID it's no problem but you'll need to do a 'manual' online exam during office hours with the UAVHub Team.)
So, what can I fly with my A2 C of C Certificate?
With your A2 C of C, you'll be able to fly drones which weigh up to 2Kg.
- 'Legacy' drones such as the DJI Mavic series, DJI Phantom Series, DJI Air Series, Autel Evo and Parrot Anafi Series can be flown under your A2 Certificate, provided they weigh less than 2Kg.
What can you do with 'Legacy’ Drones once you've got your A2 C of C?
If your drone weighs between 250g and 500g (like the DJI Air, AVATA, Spark or Parrot ANAFI) then getting your A2 C of C will let you fly in built-up areas, so long as you do not intentionally overly 'uninvolved people' (people who aren't aware that you're flying your drone and are nothing to do with you).
If your drone weighs between 500g & 2kg (like the Mavic 2, Mavic 3 or Phantom 4) then you'll need to stay 50 metres or more away from 'uninvolved people'
You will be able to fly your 'legacy' drones under these permissions with an A2 C of C between 31st December 2020 and 31st December 2025.
After this date, the rules change slightly and you will only be able to fly these aircraft outside built-up areas and you need to stay 150 metres or more away from uninvolved people.
